Why I Talk to Myself…A Lot
I talk to myself…a lot.
Often as I am walking around the house my family catches me talking to myself. They say I sound crazy. I tell them talking to one’s self is a sign of intelligence.
I don’t know if that’s true…but it sounds good.
More seriously though…I talk to myself…or preach to myself…a lot…because I need to.
There are many times when I am struggling to get my mind into God’s perspective. It is the usual battle within me between thinking the thoughts of the world or thinking the thoughts of God.
Here is what I know. With every situation in my life, when I can look at that situation from God’s perspective, it ends up better. Not always the outcome—although usually the outcome—but always my attitude.
I have also found that as I go through life from God’s perspective I experience more spiritual growth.
We all know attitude is important. Expanding on that idea, adopting God’s attitude is important to spiritual growth.
Therefore I talk to myself…a lot. What I am doing is trying to step outside of myself and talk to myself as someone else giving me God’s perspective. I know, sounds confusing. But it really works.
What do I say to myself?
That varies but I always aim for the wisdom of God taught by the Holy Spirit.
In 1 Corinthians 2:13 the Apostle Paul wrote, “This is what we speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.”
This principle is amazing! Ever had the experience of speaking to someone and you felt as if God allowed the words to come out more perfectly than you ever could have? Sure you have. Then the person asks you to repeat what you just said and you can’t. That’s a real-life, real-time example of what Paul is writing about.
I have found I can take this same principle and apply it to myself.
It works like this.
I have a situation where I am struggling to see things from God’s perspective. So I start to talk to myself…or preach to myself. I am seeking to speak words to myself explaining spiritual truths about the situation I am struggling with from the perspective of the Holy Spirit.
The outcome is often amazing! Often this process literally snaps my attitude back around to God’s perspective. Sometimes I just keep talking to myself from God’s perspective until my attitude changes.
Imagine doing this on a daily basis? What would happen?
For starters more people would think you are crazy! But trust me…it’s not so bad.
You will however experience more spiritual growth. The principle is rather simple. The more we live life from God’s perspective, the greater our spiritual growth will be.
So try it now. Take a situation you are struggling with. Start to preach to yourself from God’s perspective. Continue until your attitude snaps around to God’s perspective.
You will experience spiritual growth.
