Of Geese and Your Spiritual Growth

Recently I drove by a field full of geese. It was really an amazing site…hundreds and hundreds of geese…maybe over a thousand.

The sight got me thinking…why do geese fly south for the winter?

Maybe to stay warm…

Why do gees fly north for the summer?

Maybe to stay cool…

And how do they know where they are going?

The bigger question is, do they have a choice about where they go? The answer is no. I have never seen a goose flying south for the summer and north for the winter.

You however, are not a goose. You can fly in any direction you want. You can go left, go right, go forward, go backward…in any direction you choose.

So in your relationship with God are you flying toward your spiritual growth or away from it?

In John 3:8, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear it’s sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus asked, “How can this be?”

Jesus was talking to Nicodemus about the process of regeneration which is accomplished through the movement of the Holy Spirit.

But once you are regenerated and become a follower of Jesus, the question is no longer how can this be? Rather the question becomes, Am I riding the wind of the Holy Spirit to increased spiritual growth?

Fortunately, since you are not a goose, you have choices about where you fly. You can choose to fly toward your spiritual growth. You can choose to fly away from your spiritual growth. It’s your choice.

If you are not achieving the spiritual growth you desire, it is simply because you have chosen not to fly in the right direction.

Here are some examples of flying away from your spiritual growth activities:

  • Watching too much TV
  • Sleeping late instead of getting up early to spend time with God
  • Participating in sexual immorality
  •  Lying
  • Stealing

You get the point!

Flying toward your spiritual growth activities:

  • Spending Time in Church
  • Spending Time in the Bible
  • Spending Time in Prayer
  • Spending Time in Fellowship
  • Spending Time in Confession

You get the point!

So let’s take one step today. Pick an activity in your life causing you to fly away from your spiritual growth.

Now pick an activity which will cause you to fly toward your spiritual growth.

Here is the step to take: Today, replace your flying away activity with your flying toward activity.

It is as simple as that…but don’t underestimate the power of simplicity. Replacing one flying away activity with one flying toward activity will, over time, have an enormous impact on your spiritual growth!
