Finding True North

In Psalm 139:13, the Psalmist writes, “For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

The truth that God created your inmost being is huge. It means God has made you unique and special. It means God has a special plan and purpose for your life.

Have you found what you were created for? What you were created to do? What you were created by God to be? You are closer than you think.

Imagine you hold a compass in your hand. Look at it. Which way is the needle pointing? You know the answer. You can see it in your mind’s eye. The needle always points north.

In the same way, you have an internal compass called your inner being which always points you towards your spiritual true north. God hardwired it into your being when He created you. He knit the pattern into the fabric of your soul as you were being formed.

So what is your spiritual true north?

Spiritually, true north is always living in relationship with God by faith through Jesus Christ.

But if you know where your true spiritual north lies, how do you get there? Well…you have to go north. It is not enough to know where north is.

So how do I go north in my relationship with God? That’s easy to answer but harder to do. You pursue your spiritual growth through your relationship with God.

Almost a hundred years ago, Orison Swett Marden (1848-1924) wrote, “The trouble with most of us is that in our efforts to sell ourselves for our selfish ends or the most dollars, we impoverish our own lives and stifle our better natures…”

Your better nature will always be found in your relationship with Jesus. A life lived in pursuit of your own agenda always results in spiritual poverty.

Marden’s words are as true today as they were a hundred years ago. But don’t let them be true of you. Pursue your spiritual growth today.
